BLACK WOMEN

Racism, sexism, discrimination, colorism, western standards of beauty, microaggressions in the workplace, lack of support, and stereotypes are examples of how societal influences can greatly impact the emotional and mental health of black women in the world today. Having to maneuver around day to day wearing “emotional armor” in order to survive can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression. Black women are becoming more aware that their emotional and mental health needs to be prioritized. My intention is to offer a safe space for women to explore, express, and connect with all that they may not have felt safe exploring in the past.

BLACK MEN

Historically, America has not been much of an “ally” for black men, they have been subjected to societal stereotypes, prejudice, racism, and discrimination. Many black men grew up believing that showing emotion was a sign of weakness. Many internalize the idea that their value lies in being a provider, protector, or their physical contributions. Black men in today’s society face pressure from all areas of life, undoubtedly the pressures can contribute to emotional and mental health challenges. Unaddressed emotional and mental health can lead to repressed emotions, anger, depression, stress, and anxiety. More black men are opening up to addressing their mental health. I am here to offer support to those who are ready to take the next step.

LGBTQ

Despite the increase in cultural and societal acceptance of the LGBTQ community, discrimination, harassment, and bullying continue to be an issue. Not only do outside influences affect the  LGBTQ population, but they also face challenges associated with “coming out” to family and friends, identifying and connecting with their authentic selves, communicating feelings, and coping with social pressures, which all can lead to higher levels of depression, anxiety, self-harm, substance abuse, and other mental health concerns. The stigma that was once associated with therapy is being redirected, and people are realizing the benefits therapy has to offer. I incorporate Affirmative Therapy in the session. My intention is to provide a safe place where my clients feel accepted and understood. When you are ready, trust that you will be seen and heard as we work together.

COUPLES

Couples therapy can help at any stage of a relationship. There is no question, that relationships require a high level of commitment, time, and a tremendous amount of energy, which can take a toll on even the best relationship. Therapy does not just have to use when the relationship is at risk or in crisis. Seeking out therapy before the crisis can help prevent unhealthy relationship habits. Couples therapy can address a range of relationship issues, such as feeling disconnected from your partner, recurring conflicts, an affair, sex-related issues, or barriers in communication. If both parties are willing to put in the work, couples therapy can increase relationship satisfaction, communication, forgiveness, problem-solving and deeper connection.

MULTI CULTURAL ISSUES AND RACIAL TRAUMA

The history of racism, racial discrimination, and prejudice Black Americans have faced, is well documented. Truth is, Latinx, Indigenous People, Asians, and Muslims, living in America are no strangers to experiencing racial injustice as well. With the rise of social movements, social media, and the constant stream of news, exposing racism and discrimination in America, is far more difficult to cover up. On one hand, it’s a plus that the world is being made aware of the racial injustice that the BIOPIC community has dealt with for centuries, on the other hand, these incidences continue to happen and greatly impact  people of color and other marginalized groups. Negative effects for those who have experienced racial injustice can contribute to feelings of anger, depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and violent behaviors. It is beneficial to find someone that you feel safe exploring these feelings with, I am here to listen and support you.

STRESS AND ANXIETY

Prior to the pandemic, stress, and anxiety were already on the rise. On top of “regular life stressors,” Millennials and Generation Z came of age in the midst of a plethora of hardships. Mass shootings, political injustice, 9/11, drastic changes in politics, student loan crisis, housing market crash, unstable job market, financial uncertainty, climate change, dating, ever-changing beauty standards, and let’s not forget the power of social media. Due to the stressors experienced and witnessed, it’s not surprising the increase in anxiety, fear, depression, and unhealthy coping mechanisms used by the two generations. On the upside, Millennials and Generation Z are far more aware of mental health issues and they are making it a priority to address these issues. I am committed to helping you through these troubling times.
